"Father, how can I tell whether or not I have a religious vocation? How can I be sure?" The question of "discerning a vocation" is agonized over by many generous young Catholic today. A solid Thomist, Fr. Richard Butler, O.P., who wrote this book in 1961, proves that this type of question shows a totally wrong approach to a religious vocation - an approach that began with misguided theology in the 20th century, which then trickled down to the popular level, confusing both aspirants and spiritual directors. He clarifies the whole subject and is in complete accord with the teaching of St. Thomas Aquinas and "the unanimous opinion of the Fathers of the Church." Plus, he gives Rome's decision on a vocational controversy that erupted around 1910. Though Fr. Butler deals primarily with vocations to the religious life, he also gives the classic guidelines on priestly vocations, including indications of fitness and of unfitness.
The message of this book will be very surprising, but also extremely liberating to many generous souls wanting to explore a supernatural vocation. The author states - based on the tradition of the church - that religious vocation is "not uncommon, rare or extraordinary" and that it does not require an introspective search for some "special voice" or attraction in the inmost depths of the heart. This book is greatly needed in the Church today, and it will provide welcome, intelligent guidance both for spiritual directors and for those considering the religious life or that of the priesthood. Here is a truly much-needed book for time!http://astore.amazon.co.uk/eremisanctbru-21/detail/0895558238/026-9032281-2628429shapeimage_2_link_0
